2. gunzip simpleaffy.2.0.13.tar.gz
3. tar -xvf simpleaffy.2.0.13.tar

R installed is for linux v. R.2.2.0.

This is _NOT_ how you do it. When you have the tar ball you do
   R CMD INSTALL simpleaffy
(possibly with version numer on the simpleaffy part as well). What
you are doing might work for certain packages (or it might have
worked in the past).

After the R prompt I applied:

library(affy)
[Some work with my data]
library(simpleaffy,lib.loc="mypath_for_simpleaffy_dir")

R responds:
'simpleaffy' is not a valid package -- installed < 2.0.0

How did you install simpleaffy?  What platform are you using and  
what
version of R?

What exactly did you type or click?

With a bit more info, I bet we'll be able to provide some useful
answers.
