[Bioc-devel] release schedule

Hi Bioc Developers --

Our plan is to continue a 6-month release cycle, tying Bioc to point 
releases in R if possible. As a developer, it's very valuable to have a 
'playground' to introduce improvements and new features without 
excessive worry about alienating users. The release also helps to 
coordinate functionality across packages, and provides us with a firm 
deadline to get our software house in order. And of course new packages 
need to be made broadly available in a timely fashion.

 From http://developer.r-project.org/ the next R release is planned for 
Spring, 2012, so the conversations are still somewhat hypothetical.

Another big concern here is introduction of new packages: a possible
full year delay before getting into a release is too long.

This could of course be solved with point releases or simply by
otherwise allowing introduction of new packages in the middle of a
release cycle.
