Can you try again after uninstalling lilypond?
We do this in an automated fashion all the time on Debian and
Ubuntu where is
works fine. But we do this mostly in 'clean chroot' environments (via
pbuilder) which minimises side effects. I'd think you are
simply bitten by
lilypond here.
It works perfectly now (maybe I should have realized it myself)! And I don't really need lilypond. With a lot of hard disk space to spare, I decided to simply use the texlive-full metapackage instead of manually selecting the LaTeX packages I need or don't need.
