..and a licence of the sort described is nowhere near OpenSource requirements and clearly in conflict with the GPL. So R cannot use it. (Certainly not in conjuction with the GPL'ed readline library, anyway.)
There is also an Open Source PDF library that I have mentioned before. It seems quite powerful and easy to use. There are license problems even then, as it is under the Aladdin license, which, like the GPL, is contagious.
