minor incompatibility in model.matrix

The S and S-PLUS versions of model.matrix will ignore elements of a
contrasts argument that do not correspond to factors.  R does not.  It
produces and error of
 Error: contrasts apply only to factors
even if the contrasts themselves are NULL.
