R crashes when given graphic command (PR#2067)

After starting R, when I give a graphic command (e.g. barplot, plot, etc.) R
crashes with the comment from Windows "Rgui.exe has generated errors and will be
closed by Windows. . . . "  I have tried reinstalling msvcrt.dll in the \bin
directory (FAQ 2.14) but to no avail.
