R-beta: exponentiation continued

I have now tried the same thing on Red Hat 4.1 with R 0.61.1 and there
is no problem. Hence I agree that it is Red Hat 5 libc. Thanks.

I haven't tried Red Hat 5 yet, in part because I thought it was necessary to
switch from libc to libgc and I'm not looking forward to that headache. Could
this be the problem?
