Just as remote possibility, but a potentially impossible bug source, Signal 11 errors are often associated with hardware (commonly memory) errors. Is that in any way a reasonable explanation? (There are some interesting web pages if you search for signal 11 segmentation.)
Compiling R 0.99.0 and GRASS 5.0beta5 on a different machine, also under RH 6.1, and running the R CMD check for the package, showed that your intuition was correct. I'm not quite sure, since I repeated the fault several times on my home machine with more and fewer programs running, and it always failed at the same point, so I'll still run CMD check through gdb. I guess it's a hardware matter, though I haven't seen any other behaviour in my home machine that seemed odd (not really, but I tend to think it's me that's odd, not the machine!) I'll pass on the results of gdb later. Thanks for your help.
