Here are some further possibilities:

1. An equivalent of S-PLUS plot.gam(), which I
would call plot.terms().
[predict(.., type="terms") provides the
information that is plotted.]

There is a version of this in termplot() -- it was the motivation for
getting predict(,type="terms") to work.  Improvements are welcome. I think
it's even aliased so that help(plot.gam) gives the termplot help.
