(PR#8500) standard install on OS 10.3.9 crashes on start without useful diagnostics (PR#8500)
This won't actually help you at all, but I used the standard install on OS 10.3.9 (Powerbook G4) just last week without any problems. On the other hand, my install was on a machine that had previously had other versions of R. -thomas
