Oops. I thought that one was a "known bad" for egcs<1.1 (RH5.2 ships
1.0.3a). Crashes in qbeta.c, IIRC. Will it complete "make check"?

Note: sun-sparc, and Peter once told me that has nothing to do
with the compiler on Intel.

This makes me say what I thought of earlier: would be it be a good
idea for Kurt to ask those people who used gcc/egcs to give us a
version number? AFAIK egcs is an addon for RH5.2 (ships with, does
not install by default) so it would be very easy to have a grabbed
a later rpm for egcs/ecgs-g77 (which are not even on the 1-CD version
in use here).
#
Yes it would be a good idea.

Ideally we should have something like

	CC	gcc 2.7.2.3
	FC	egcs-2.90.29 980515 (egcs-1.0.3 release)
	MAKE	GNU make 3.76.1

which would be my current setup.

Brian suggested this morning to redo PLATFORMS as follows: first an
intro part like

0.63.3:
  Linux:
    i386	Debian 1.3, 2.0, Red Hat 4.0, 5.0, 5.2, SuSe 6.0
    ppc LinuxPPC 4
    alpha	xxx
  FreeBSD 2.2.5
  SGI Irix 6.2
  Sun Solaris (Sparc) 2.5.1, 2.6, 2.7
  DEC Alpha (OSF4)

and then simply append the new-style database for detailed info.

Maybe I should then split CC/FC/MAKE as above.

1. It seems as if the redhat 5.2 sparc only has egcs. Because
   a) /usr/bin/egcs and /usr/bin/gcc are identical.
   b) gcc -v:
Reading specs from /usr/lib/gcc-lib/sparc-redhat-linux/egcs-2.90.29/specs
gcc version egcs-2.90.29 980515 (egcs-1.0.3 release)

This is different from the i386 version, where:
[gb@localhost gb]$ gcc -v
Reading specs from /usr/lib/gcc-lib/i386-redhat-linux/2.7.2.3/specs
gcc version 2.7.2.3
[gb@localhost gb]$ diff /usr/bin/egcs /usr/bin/gcc
Binary files /usr/bin/egcs and /usr/bin/gcc differ

2. It completes "make check".

Argh. Saw RedHat, implied Intel... Sorry.

Yes, the bug is very system-dependent -- doesn't even affect the
windows-i386 egcs compiler (not in that spot anyway) since it doesn't
inline the same routines.
Agreed. Optimization levels too?
