As for R on Linux/Alpha, people had better think about compiling sources with Compaq's ccc/cxx/fort. These compilers create far better code than GNU's gcc/g++/g77 for Alpha. R compiled by GNU's compilers runs slow. I do not know if R-developers are running Linux/Alpha boxes at hand. (Probably not.)
