it seems that my problem once again was a leftover cygwin1.dll in another directory which is NOT in the path. i think we had a report about this problem on the list some days ago. after renaming ALL cygwin1.dll's except the one in the directory with brian's tools things worked smoothly again.

The one in Prof. Ripley's Rtools.zip is extracted from cygwin. I recalled reading somewhere in the instruction that the one in minGW sometimes doesn't work. Andy
