mtext(. col = ...) stopped working in 0.65.0 (PR#281)

Ouch, ouch..

  plot(1) ;mtext("Default",side=1)
  mtext("Red Herring",col="red",font=2,cex=3)
  mtext("adj = 1",adj=1,font=3,cex=2)

works alright in 0.64.2, but not anymore in 0.65.0.
This is true for x11() and postscript() at least,
but probably device independent.
