Did this system pass make check? I believe this happens if you use aggresive optimizations under the SunPro compiler, which do not respect IEEE arithmetic and do fail make check. In particular, avoid -fast.

Doesn't happen on any version of "UNIX" that I have access to. I think we had a report once where something like that was caused by an incorrect compiler (or compiler flag). We need to have full information on your system and build to do anything about it. To wit (Solaris 7, R-1.3.1)
