I am filing this as a bug report so it doesn't get lost.

The config.sub file is part of the GNU automake package and is meant to be
used as is. The version on my system (automake-1.4) does have an entry for
alphapca5[67], so I guess the config.sub that comes with R just needs to
be replaced with an up-to-date version.

Thanks.
Interesting. You're on a Debian system like myself? The automake 1.4
sources do not have that, but the versions in /usr/share/... do, same
for libtool.

Anyway, I just realized that autoconf is available by anonCVS, and that
the most current versions of the config.guess and config.sub scripts are
always in the CVS tree. Will update the versions in the sources.

[Peter: this is something else we should most likely always do before a
new release, similar to changing the version numbers in the FAQ etc. Do
we have a list of these front-matter things?]

This is much more complicated than I thought. I'm using Red Hat, but I
see that the same thing: the version of config.sub in the source for
automake is not the one that gets installed into /usr/share/automake.
During the build process, rpm runs "libtoolize --copy --force" which copies
the version of config.sub from /usr/share/libtool into the source directory.
The source for libtool-1.3.4 does have the up-to-date version of config.sub,
so I suppose this should be regarded as the original.
