I had intended that these "a1", "a2" ... releases be hacker releases which will be followed by a R-0.50.stable release when the (worst) problems are sorted out. Thats why I announced to "r-devel" rather than "r-announce".
(Note this is information rather than any kind of policy statement, you are of course free to do whatever you like with R)
Sorry everyone, This was mostly my mistake. Martyn sent me an email that he had uploaded the packages to CRAN incoming, and I was only in my office for a few minutes, so without further thinking I moved them into CRAN/src and told Martyn that I had done so and that he might announce the packages now.
From a user perspective, the bugs are perhaps not that bad (well,
