R-alpha: text outside plots

The problem is that in X11 clipping is only applied to graphic
elements, not to text elements (why distinguish the two?), whereas
PostScript does the right thing. There are some possible work arounds,
but don't hold your breath.  Getting 0.60 out is job number one at
present.
