Uwe Ligges made a very good point: please try starting R with --vanilla
before reporting problems.  Many reports have boiled down to problems
with saved .RData or .Rhistory files.

Let me add: 
On Windows OS an existing .Rhistory is read in, even if R is started
with --vanilla. To avoid this, R must be started from a "clean"
directory.
