regex pattern assistance

I don't believe you need an extra package for that. Try
sub("\\/mnt\\/AO\\/AO Data\\/([-[:alnum:]]*)\\/.+", "\\1", x)
or, with package stringr,
str_match(x,"\\/mnt\\/AO\\/AO Data\\/(.+)\\/.+")
