still persists. Anyway, I think the way with read.table 

is a

reasonable alternative. I guess that spss sometimes uses
headers which are either misspecified by spss or the
read.spss codes don't get it right.

Yesterday 'read.spss' did a great job, no problems. One 
restriction occurs using a 32MB dataset (ALLBUS 1980--96) --
 this is definitly to much (for R). Creating a smaller 
working file is a solution.
