S Programming Book at Amazon.com
not really that strange. amazon had some in inventory, all of which apparently got snapped up this morning at the fire sale price. apart from that inventory, the best info amazon currently has is that the publisher is out of stock. if someone makes an inquiry to amazon customer service, and the publisher is not actually out of stock, the status will eventually change (though it'd be surprising if the price stayed at ~$18 after re-ordering from springer). certainly either springer or amazon is wrong, but i wouldn't take for granted which one; there's inevitably some latency in availability data on a website. i know of at least a couple of people besides me who successfully ordered the book this morning. cheers jon.

As of a moment ago (9 a.m., Monday, Jan. 8, 2001), the S Programming book by Venables and Ripley was once again selling for 17.98 American dollars at Amazon.com. Alas, I notice that "Mixed Effects Models in S and S-Plus" by Pinheiro and Bates now lists at Amazon for 97.25 American dollars, as opposed to about $70 a little while ago.
Very strange stuff. Amazon says S Programming is out of stock at the publishers and wait for reprinting. The publishers, Springer, say it is in stock. Also Pinheiro and Bates is listed at US$69.95 at the Springer site. David Scott
