Why it did not work for me?

Please read the R Installation and Administration manual. You are supposed to check from the OS shell, not from within R. Additionally, you have to do it on the package sources and you will need the relevant tools and compiler. Anyway, the checks have already been performed for you on recent versions of R and systemfit.
