It is probably a silly question, but may I humbly suggest that you may
have accidentally downloaded via ftp in ascii rather than binary?  Was the
size the same?

I've done it myself - rather like typing shutdown -r now on Christmas Day
(true story) only to find I was in an xterm logged into another machine!!
