loading X11 device in R

LibraNewbie 
I'm trying to view plots in the r-base statistical package.  According 
to the manual,
the graphics package is loaded automatically with the x11( ) command. 
However,
apparently it isn't;  moreover, I get

                          "x11 device has not been loaded"

when I type x11( ) at the command prompt in r-base.  Any suggestions how to
load x11 device?
