mtext: rotating text

I had a similar problem trying to use mtext to put a vertical label on a vertical axis with horizontal tick labels.
plot(1:10, las=1)
mtext("Hello", 2)
or using par():
opar <- par(las=1)
plot(1:10)
par(opar)
mtext("Hello", 2)
