Is it possible to use par() within par()? Something like:
par(mfcol=c(2,2),mar=c(4.5,4.5,2,2))
op  <- par(las=1,xaxs="r",mai=c(1,0.75,1,1))
plot(hist(x),main="",xlim=c(0,100),xaxt="n",yaxt="n",xlab="",ylab="",border="white")

par(new=TRUE)
y<-hist(log10(x))
par(op)

plot(sort(log10(x)))

dev.off()
