R 1.4.0 much slower than R 1.3.1

Dear R-ers

I've recently upgraded to R-1.4 but I have noticed that it is slower
to load datasets than R-1.3.1:

Yes. It's a bug. It's fixed in R-patched.  It's already been asked and
answered at least twice on this list in the last 48 hours.
