Problems with installation on Debian

Check your $PATH environment variable - what's happening is the old version is in an earlier search path than the new one. In debian, the
old
is probably in /usr/bin/R and the new in /usr/local/bin/R since you built it from source.
Best would probably be to remove the whole thing, which you can probably do with:
dpkg --remove r-base
