   For what it's worth ... I got similar messages when compiling 0.63.1 on
SunOS 4.1.4, with gcc.  We have Gnu make as 'gmake' here and a Sun version
of 'make', and I used gmake but plain old make may have been called from a
lower level within the make process.  To work around this problem I just
changed to the appropriate directory
(.../R-0.63.1/src/library/modreg/src), ran gmake manually, and then cd'd
back up to the top and ran gmake again.
