simple example for linear mixed effects model

Could someone point me to a small example of a linear mixed effects
model, please?

Check R_HOME/library/nlme/scripts/ch01.R 

But better get the book by Pinheiro/Bates (PB)

Ideally, this example would only have a few data points so I could
calculate by hand to compare results to R results, please.

For classical anova, this might be a good choice to learn how
it works. For mixed models, I recommend spend the time with PB.
