legend on a lattice (developmental package) plot

Is there a way to put a legend on an xyplot -- eg,
something akin to the key function? 

Not yet, but coming soon, in the next release of
grid/lattice. (The basic code is already done, but
it's very slow right now. Might take some time to
fix.)

Or, is there a way to get the R legend
function to work on a lattice plot? 

No. Unfortunately none of the standard R graphics
functions can be used in grid/lattice.
