If I understand correctly what you said, a plot of residuals 
against an X is not an added-variable plot. An added variable 

'Added variable plots' was the phrase used by the previous poster, and the description was also theirs, not mine. I intended only to draw attention to the fact that a-v plots are available in car - and thank you for putting them there! - as the previous poster hadn't mentioned the fact. 

I confess that I did not check the description given by the previous poster  before doing so. You're quite right; as written it does not correspond to the usual meaning of the term.
