No suggestions, I'm afraid, but an observation. I too use Kate but I use
it in it's own window-- I never edit within R. That's neither here nor
there, just my personal preference. But I have noticed that even
standalone, Kate occasionally crashes when reading or writing files. It's
annoying enough that I'll probably switch editors....
