help with RCMDR - can't get install to work

It sounds like you're on Mac OSX. (R runs on lots of platforms, so you should say which one you're using when problems come up.) If so, take a look at the download page on CRAN: it mentions that Tcl/Tk needs to be installed separately, it's not included in the regular download. Duncan Murdoch
