Hi Daniel, This is not true. There are methods that are specifically designed to do a PCA-type analysis on mixed categorical and continuous variables, viz dudi.mix and dudi.hillsmith in package ade4. De Leeuw's homals method takes this a step further, doing amongst other things, a non-linear version of PCA using any type of variable.
