I've since deleted the previous version but the problem persisted until I removed the old library itself which was in a directory which is not the default location. I've not made any reference to it since I installed 1.5.1, so it was surprising that it was being used. Does that mean there is a mechanism that looks for a likely library by the name even though its directory has not been mentioned? I could understand that happening if it was in the default location, but evidently it searches for the first occurrence of something that looks like a library even before it looks in the default location where a newer one exists. Is that a feature?
No. But watch out for environment variable R_LIBS (check the last bit of ?library).
