Under Windows 2000 I installed R 1.4.0 some time ago. I then installed R 1.4.1 just now. If I hit the Windows Start button select Programs from the menu that appears select R from the menu that appears then I get a menu with R 1.4.0 R 1.4.1 R 1.4.0 Help R 1.4.1 Help Uninstall R for Windows If I select Uninstall R for Windows it uninstalls R 1.4.1 but I want to uninstall 1.4.0 . How do I do that? There does not appear to be separate uninstalls for the two versions. -.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.- r-help mailing list -- Read http://www.ci.tuwien.ac.at/~hornik/R/R-FAQ.html Send "info", "help", or "[un]subscribe" (in the "body", not the subject !) You go to the 1.4.0 directory and run Uninstall.exe. This and related issues are covered in the rw-FAQ in R-devel (1.5.0 to be). BTW, the behaviour is quite common for Windows applications.

This works but 1. there are stil some files left including some dot files and the library directory hierarchy. I guess you have to delete them by hand? 2. the Start | Programs | R | Uninstall R for Windows menu item disappeas do it won't be possible to use it for 1.4.1 either. It seems you have to uninstall 1.4.0 before installling 1.4.1 if you want to be able to rely on the uninstall in the Start | Programs | R menu -.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.- r-help mailing list -- Read http://www.ci.tuwien.ac.at/~hornik/R/R-FAQ.html Send "info", "help", or "[un]subscribe" (in the "body", not the subject !) It only deletes files it installed.

Right.

Indeed. That's what the R-devel rw-FAQ item recommends, and again, is common for Windows programs.

It's not a big problem. Since you don't have uninstall R version 1.4.0 all the old files have been overwritten but not the shortcuts since they don't have the same name. However they still use the same file: I mean shortcut R 1.4.0 and shortcut 1.4.1 both have the same target. The same for Uninstall. You can simply erase the shortcut 1.4.0, and everything will be ok.
