ooops, he is not a consultant, he is a full time employee. it also seems
that we are not ditching sas. instead he will be using R in certain places
where sas would take too long.
well, there is also an oracle database on the machine and i also don't
exactly know what the DBA does. i just try to keep the machine up and
running as much as possible and tuned fast as possible.
removing the config.cache was the fix. i felt a little stupid so i
greped and finally reread the faq/readme/install and found nothing
on removing config.cache. must be some general knowledge thing about
config scripts that i did not know about.

You're not the first one to get bitten by that. I suppose we really
should zap the old cache at the beginning of the configure script,
even though it's rather convenient for those of us who recompile on a
near-daily basis to have configure run through a bit faster.
