maplot() can do this --> ?matplot
If you want more fine control, sequentially use things like
plot(......)
lines(......)
axis(...)
# etc

Use:
par(new = TRUE)
as in:
hist(rnorm(100, mean = 20, sd = 12))
par(new = TRUE)
hist(rnorm(100, mean = 22, sd = 1))
