image plot legends

Hi,

is there anybody knowing a possibility to produce a legend
(describing the color scheme) in an image plot in R. In S-Plus
this works using image.legend.

The contributed package: fields

has a function: image.plot

that has the same arguments the image function but attempts to add a
legend strip in an semi-intelligent way.  Our group has found this very
useful to produce rapidly image plots with some default legend labeling
