I am unfamiliar with genstat, but in our notes for psychology we cover repeated measures in R. In the current version, see section 4.2.3, and more generally, 6.7. It sounds like your predictor variables should be defined as factors, but I'm not sure (since they may be ordered). Because our examples use mostly binary variables, we don't bother with that. There is also discussion of repeated measures in Venables and Ripley's book and in Chambers and Hastie's book.
