List of varying length suitable for use as dimnames

I need to create a list of varying length of the form

SS1 SS2 SS3 . . . SSn

I will be using the list for the dimnames of a matrix that will have varying dimensions. Any suggestions for a good way to accomplish this would be appreciated.
