Hello All: Amazon is now at this very moment selling "S Programming" at $59.95 with 2-3 days delivery. Some one among us ought to exploit R to develop a forecasting model to predict when next Amazon markets Venable and Ripley's book again at $17.95. LOL! Amazon have been experimenting with changing prices up and down so as to see what impact prices have on people's willingness to buy. Slashdot has had a couple of stories on it <URL:http://slashdot.org/articles/00/09/06/1418246.shtml> <URL:http://slashdot.org/articles/00/09/13/1237216.shtml> The latter story says that they are refunding what you paid in excess when testing is over. So perhaps it doesn't matter... :-) But then, I'm boycotting Amazon because of spamming, their lack of respect for customer's privacy and for their one-click-patent. Best, Kjetil

Dear Kjetil: Thank you for the info on Slashdot. I find quite a great deal of price discrimination in the global academic book market. Many scientific textbooks are available in Thailand at prices that are often 10% of those found on Amazon or on American bookshelves. Sadly, S-Programming is not amongst them. But, then again, international pharmaceuticals try to sell third world countries HIV antiroviral drugs at first world prices. See how the world turns? Were you to go to the Chulalongkorn University Bookstore website at http://www.chula.ac.th/ you would discover what prices international publishers sell their publications to third world nations. Unfortunately, much of the text on this website is in Thai and may be incomprehensible.
