I am currently fixing this. The problem will be gone in 0.64. The problem is in the way that X11 handles color. It is particularly acute if you are running things like Netscape and Window Maker, which gobble up all the colors they can get. The New Plan: On Pseudocolor (8-bit) displays will try to pre-allocate (a.k.a. gobble up) a reasonable selection of colors and then approximate the colors a user requests from this collection. If necessary I will install a private color map, which will result in wild color changes as you move the mouse in and out of R graphics windows. On true-color (16, 24 or 32-bit displays) you will get exactly the colors you ask for.
