R on Sharp Zaurus 5500?

For what it is worth, here are my experiences.

When I first got my zaurus I compiled R version 1.4.0 for the it. It took
some time to do, but managed with the skiffclusters at familiar.org.
(libf2c was the hardest part). Compilation should be easier now that there
are onboard compilers but I haven't tried.

I thought this would be neat to have in the classroom. (It did get one
student to buy a zaurus) Unfortunately performance was horribly slow
(this was on the 32meg model and memory was tight as I didn't have
stuff stored on my SD card), writing to postscript (how I was going to
view graphics) was buggy (floating point emulation issue?) and the
whole thing prone to crash. I then compiled the oldest R version I
could find: 0.49. This actually ran well, although it did not survive
a suspend event which made usage tedious. I still couldn't view
graphics though. I don't know about the NA issue mentioned here.

The NA issue showed up first as a PostScript bug under Debian/ARM too,
so it sounds pretty much like it happens on the Zaurus as well.
