problems with R setup in UNIX

Dear R-guRus:
I have compiled a private (in my home directory) version of R in my 
Unix account, but a lot of commands aren't working in R for me - help 
command doesn't work, library(whatever - MASS, lattice, etc) doesn't 
work (I get a message "there is not Package whatever), and shell 
command doesn't work. 
Does anybody have any ideas on what might be missing in my R setup??
