You can also set -ncols to limit Netscape in the number of color cells it allocates. 64 is a reasonable value for most purposes.
Note that -ncols is broken in Netscape 4.01, 4.02 and 4.03 and simply doesn't do anything. I don't know the status of 4.04. We are now running 4.05 where -ncols works again. To add a little more, -ncols 32 works even better from the point of view of simultaneous use of R, xdvi and ghostview, although netscape renders images less well (generally of no impact given the way in which images are (ab)used by people creating web pages).
