Yes, jpeg at 100% is to be avoided, but speed depends on 1) The graphics windows size 2) The machine's RAM 3) The machine's processor speed and I've never seen anything like the times you report.
I know I can save the graph with postscript() in the script, or cut and paste into MSWord and save the document.
Or save as postscript or metafile from the menu bar ...
