map("world2", "USA:alaska")
gives the low resolution, using the "world" database is split on the date
line. The mapdata package has better resolution.

Look at: http://www.census.gov/geo/www/cob/bdy_files.html There are shapefiles of the 50 states there, outlines, counties, and others.
